An Educational Resource & Accompanyment
Huddersfield Windrush Veterans: They Served with Honour is an educational resource designed to accompany the documentary The Armed Services: Huddersfield’s Windrush Forgotten Veterans.
The documentary places the lived experiences of Huddersfield’s Caribbean veterans at the heart of the classroom. By sharing their stories, these men and women invite others to reflect on their own histories, identities, and choices.
For young people, seeing the ‘superheroes’ of their community speak openly about their journeys is more than inspiring – it’s transformative. It gives them powerful tools to navigate their own paths and to connect past events to their present-day lives.
A Flexible Learning Tool
The resource is designed for both digital self-paced learning and classroom-based teaching.
- Students can watch film excerpts and animations to bring history to life.
- Teachers can use structured presentations to lead lessons.
- Content aligns with the National Curriculum for History, English, and PSHCE in a creative, engaging way.
- Learners and teachers can move at their own pace, with opportunities for deeper exploration.
Resource Overview
Our resource is divided into five main sections providing global, national, and local context. Each section comes handouts & teachers notes.

Introduction: A Timeline of Context
A rich historical timeline connecting global events, Britain’s colonial past, and Huddersfield’s local stories. Students discover how interconnected histories shape the present.

Section 1: Echoes of
Empire
Explores the British Empire’s legacy in the military, focusing on the West Indies Regiment and challenging traditional narratives of service and sacrifice.

Section 2: The Windrush Generation
Through oral histories, students meet the first Caribbean families to settle in Huddersfield, reflecting on themes of migration, identity, and resilience.

Section 3: Serving with
Honour
From historical diaries to present-day stories, veterans share deeply personal accounts of service, bridging the past and present.

Section 4: Life After
Service
Invites students to consider the challenges and opportunities of life after military service, building empathy and critical thinking.

Additional Materials and Scheme of Learning
In addition to the main learning sections the resource provides a full scheme of learning and teachers notes for full adaptation into school curriculums.
Why This Matters
Too often, the contributions of Windrush veterans are absent from Britain’s mainstream historical narrative. This resource not only fills that gap, it redefines the story, giving young people the tools to question historical perspectives, connect personal and community histories, and see themselves as part of history in the making.
